This reprogramming service is specifically for Mazda RX-8 speedometers which only show speed on a KMH basis and is ideal for vehicles imported from Japan in to the UK.
The conversion is suitable for vehicles requiring an ESVA or SVA test.
Reprogrammed Speedometer Functions
After the speedometer has been reprogrammed, the speedometer will display an illuminated 'MPH' symbol on the LCD display, instead of the previously displayed KMH symbol.
At the same time, the odometer reading which previously represented Kilometers is converted to an equivalent mileage i.e. if the odometer reading initially shows 16,000 - after programming it will show 10,000. The odometer will also now increment in miles.
The digital speed display will now be MPH only. Switching between MPH & KMH is not possible.
Please note : Speedometer re-programming does not remove the factory set road speed limit!
Removing the speedometer
Please note : It is advisable to remove the negative cable connection from the battery and wait 30 minutes before commencing dis-assembly.
To remove the RX-8 speedometer from the vehicle, unscrew the steering column plastic cover from below. With the cover removed, two screws which secure the speedometer should be visible from beneath. With the retaining screws removed, lift the speeometer front up and forward slightly, then with a firm grip, pull the speedometer hood towards you; it is retained by firmly fitted dash fixing clips. Finally, unclip the two wiring plugs from the rear of the speedometer and remove the entire assembly.
The speedometer is retained in the plastic hood with four screws. Two of these are located inside deep, round access tubes at the top of the speedometer. The other two are located at the bottom rear of the speedometer. With the four screws removed, the speedometer can be lifted from the hood.
